NASA Scientist visits local business

A small technology start-up company based in Wakefield Council’s Cedars Business Incubation Centre in Hemsworth West Yorkshire is attracting interest in its work from across the globe.

Cambridge Correlators Ltd (CCL) recently welcomed a visit from a senior NASA scientist to share common areas of interest and explore future collaborative work. The company recently welcomed a senior NASA scientist from the US to Hemsworth.

The meeting, with Dr Richard Juday, focussed on common areas of interest and explored future collaborative opportunities. Dr Juday spent 35 years at NASA, working as a senior scientist and head of the Hybrid Vision Laboratory at the Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas, where he managed multi-million dollar development projects for the US space program.

CCL was co-founded by Wakefield-born Dr Nicholas New. He established the company base at Cedars Business Incubation Centre in Hemsworth, after completing his doctorate at Cambridge University. The company has developed a revolutionary patented technology that uses light to process vast amounts of image or pattern data at speeds far beyond the capabilities of equivalent electronic systems.

CCL has benefited from business planning and support offered by the team from Wakefield Council who run the Cedars Business Incubation Centre. Through support from the Council team, CCL has been able to make links with other local businesses. Having recently started work with RDT Precision Optics, based in the Council’s South Elmsall workspace, as its manufacturing partner.

Dr New said; “The support received from the Council’s team at Cedars has been invaluable. They have been incredible in providing crucial business advice to help get the business started. We have also benefited from their business insight and connecting us with specialists who we wish to work with.”

The company is currently engaged in evaluating its technology for use in military environments, with a large defence contractor, following a successful project funded by the Ministry of Defence. It has also recently completed a successful proof of concept project funded by Yorkshire Forward. Since 2008 CCL has sold academic demonstrator kits and is now exporting to universities around the world, including India, the Middle East and the US. To date the company has secured over £500,000 in private and public funding.
