Deaf blind man overcomes barriers to create art exhibition.

A deaf blind man has overcome tough barriers to discover a passion for art which is to be displayed in an exhibition at Shipley Library.

Minerva Hussain, 41, is supported by Bradford Council’s Adult and Community Services to live in specialist accommodation in Cheshire through its Deafness Support Network Stepping Stones. With the support of staff at Bradford Council’s Sensory Needs Service and Stepping Stones he has discovered a passion for art, creating work in pottery, collage and pastels.

His work is to be displayed in Shipley Library between 2 and 14 August with an official launch from 1.30pm to 3pm on Wednesday 4 August.

The exhibition marks how much Minerva has achieved since he moved into specialist accommodation five years ago. He was initially extremely isolated, as he had no means of communication.

However, through the Council’s Sensory Needs Service and Stepping Stones, he can now communicate through ‘Hand Over Hand’, a way of using British Sign Language through touching hands with the person he is ’speaking’ to.

This new confidence has helped him develop his artwork which is mostly of a wildlife theme.

Coun Amir Hussain, Executive Member for Social Care, said: “What Minerva has achieved is very impressive and just proves how getting the right help and support can really change a person’s life for the better. This is all thanks to the hard work and commitment of the teams involved who have done a tremendous job. I look forward to seeing his art exhibition.”
