A million in a decade for civic charities

The Lord Mayor’s Appeal in Bradford has raised £1,000,000 since 2000.

A number of charities and good causes have benefited from the appeal in the last ten years. Some of the charities include Marie Curie, Macmillan Nurses, Nell Bank, Manorlands Hospice, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Bradford Burns Unit, Born in Bradford, Alzheimer’s Society and Bradford Disability Sports & Leisure.

On Monday, 19 July the current Lord Mayor of Bradford Coun Peter Hill will host a celebration attended by his predecessors since 2000 along with charities they supported, volunteers, businesses and community groups.

Any registered charity can put itself forward to be considered as a beneficiary of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal but the final choice is made by the incoming Lord Mayor.

This year the Lord Mayor’s Appeal is raising money for a new outdoor play area at Nell Bank Centre, Ilkley.

Lord Mayor Coun Peter Hill said: “This is a fantastic achievement and goes to prove what fundraisers keep telling us, that Yorkshire is the most generous region. On behalf of all former Lord Mayor’s I would like to thank the people of the district for their support and generosity.

“So many people get involved on all sorts of levels, schools holding bun sales, individuals doing everything from sky diving to shaving their heads and companies supporting black tie dinners. In whatever way people help big or small, donating money, volunteering, supporting events organised by the Lord Mayor’s Appeal or providing a service we appreciate every penny and this milestone proves that it all adds up and helps the valuable work done by so many charities locally to continue.”
