Students from Prince Henry’s Grammar School spent several weeks completely updating the colourful mural that has adorned the public entrance to Otley police station for roughly 15 years.
At the start of the project, the Year 10 pupils, who are completing their BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design, were given a tour of the station by PC Dave Robinson, who works on the public helpdesk.
They drew their inspiration from the community work carried out in the area by the North West Outer Neighbourhood Policing Team that is based at the station.
The eye-catching artwork they produced also features a graffiti-style image of their Safer Schools Partnership officer PC Heidi Beardsmore.
Inspector Richard Coldwell, who heads the North West Outer team, said: “The amount of thought and hard work the pupils have put into this new mural is truly amazing and we are incredibly grateful to them for the commitment they have shown. Their efforts have created a really impactive spectacle that brightens up the place for all who work here and gives visitors something to marvel at.
“This project has helped us to strengthen our links with the school and is an excellent example of young people making a really positive contribution to the community.”
Natalie Sadler, the school’s Art Department BTEC Co-ordinator, said: “The teamwork shown by the students during this project has been excellent. This type of work can only be beneficial in reinforcing the positive image of the police in the eyes of young people. The school’s Art Department is now looking for other public buildings that would benefit from such vibrant and exciting artwork.”
