Third anniversary of Knaresborough hit and run

As the third anniversary of a hit-and-run tragedy in Knaresborough is reached, the search goes on to find the driver responsible

Bill Hendry’s life was tragically cut short three years ago today after he was hit by an unknown small vehicle with narrow tyres while he was walking his dog Abby across a road in Knaresborough.

The driver of the vehicle knowingly failed to stop at the collision scene on Stockwell Lane. The 75-year-old local man suffered serious injuries and died in Harrogate District Hospital.

Despite intensive police and family efforts to trace the driver through enquiries and media appeals, the person behind the wheel has yet to come forward to explain what happened on February 26, 2007.

Detective Dave Horne, who is leading the investigation, is hoping that further publicity on the anniversary of the tragic event will help to jog people’s memories, and possibly even prompt the driver to do the right thing and contact the police.

Detective sergeant Dave Horne has put together nearly every second of the incident with only the last few seconds to go and has said, “The incident will remain open until it is solved”.

Police are especially keen to trace a mustard yellow car that was seen leaving the post office as the driver of the vehicle may have vital information. The tiniest bit of information could be key to solving this case.

The driver or anyone else who can help the inquiry should call Harrogate CID immediately on 0845 60 60 247, or if they wish to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers on 0800-555111.
