Roads Policing Officers in Bradford have had a busy week enforcing traffic laws. The team who are based at Lawcroft House Police Station gave out 168 fixed penalty notices for traffic offences last week and seized 29 vehicles for no insurance. On top of this, reported 36 drivers for Summons, gave eight further motorists vehicle defect forms and stopped and searched another sixteen.
Of the fixed penalty notices given out, the majority were for either an adult or child in the vehicle not wearing their seatbelt. Other offences included speeding, driving through red traffic lights and using handheld mobile phones whilst driving.
On Monday (22nd February), Officers targeted a bus lane on Thornton Road and issued 22 fixed penalty notices to drivers who thought they could jump the queues in the rush hour. Other motorists welcomed the action and were giving ‘thumbs up’ and cheering the Officers carrying out the operation.
Sergeant Andy Barron said: “It has been a successful week for the team but it’s very frustrating for us to see so many people in Bradford ignoring simple traffic laws. The laws are not put there to irritate drivers; they are in place for safety reasons.
It’s worth bearing in mind that if you were sitting in the back seat of a car without a seat belt on and were involved in a collision at just 30mph, you would hit the seat in front of you with a force of between 30 and 60 times your bodyweight. These kind of forces could cause not only serious injury or death to you but also to anyone sat in front of you or next to you. All those drivers we stopped should think carefully about whether they want their children or themselves to suffer that fate.”
